More than 200 hours of bandha

With vehicular movement along the East-West Highway and Koshi Highway remaining obstructed for over 200 hours ever since the formation of the UML-led government, it seems that there is no respite in store for people from bandas.

Protesting the president’s move of reinstating the Army chief sacked by the previous government led by UCPN (Maoist), the party imposed a daily two-hour of highway blockade for 10 consecutive days along the East-West Highway and Koshi Highway. Traffic obstructions were created during the rush office hours, affecting thousands of employees and service seekers alike.

It’s been more than 200 hours since the bandha has been imposed.

Not only parties, but also other groups continue to call banda for their own causes. Vehicular movement along the Koshi Highway was shut for two straight days recently due to the workers’ protest at Duhabi in Sunsari.

Currently, the ongoing indefinite banda imposed by the Federation of Other Backward Classes-Nepal has brought traffic along the two highways to a standstill.

It is said that transport entrepreneurs incur a loss of around Rs. 15 million every day due to bandas.

An increasing number of bandas have not only affected vehicular movement, but also normal life, hitting people hard. The prices of petroleum products, foodstuff and other essentials are skyrocketing everyday, thanks to the increasing culture of organising bandas.
